Engaging Youth in Local Civic News

  • Currently active
  • Created by our station
Intentionally including youth in our reporting confirms to them that their perspectives are valuable and deserve to be included in the conversation. Louisville’s young community has been highly active in the social justice protests and conversations about climate change, and those in power are now poised to listen. WFPL will increase coverage of issues affecting Louisville’s youth and engage them in civic dialogue. Our efforts will include featuring youth voices in our award winning talk-show, In Conversation, across multiple reporting beats and other projects and collaborations as appropriate.

We’ve been working across multiple teams in the WFPL newsroom and Louisville Public Media more broadly. Additionally, we’ve sent a call out on social media to ask for people of all ages, youth included, to describe what home means to them. This is part of a collaboration with Louisville Magazine ahead of the upcoming election. We are also in conversation and collaboration with the 2892 Miles to Go project which engages local teachers to create audio storytelling projects. The goal of the project is to reflect a more inclusive and accurate American history by highlighting place-based stories of people who have traditionally been left out of the historic narrative.
