Kansas City PBS and Black & Veatch Mentoring program has been in place for 8 years in the Kansas City Missouri Metropolitan area. So far the program has mentored 5,226 5th graders in 85 elementary schools. The program brings engineers into 5th-grade classrooms, focusing on electricity, water, and structural engineering.
Engineers explain how all three topics work and include hands-on activities. We have a pre-assessment and a post-assessment to evaluate the success of the project. The program has been successful in getting engineers to engage with students in the classroom.
