Solving Community Problems with Engineering (SCoPE) is a capstone GBH unit designed to expand students’ ideas about engineering beyond iterative cycles of building and testing simple products. The program is designed to show how engineering design can be used to solve an environmental problem relevant to their communities—nutrient pollution. Students apply earth science concepts they learned in science class, conduct research and investigations, and use simulations to define the problem and design solutions to develop a plan for reducing nutrient pollution in their watershed.
