Medford—Southern Oregon PBS and local school partners are working to bring media industry experience for a few aspiring journalism students in Southern Oregon through a new media arts pilot program that is in its second year. A few Phoenix-Talent students have been engaged by SO PBS since November 2021 in Southern Oregon’s first ever PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs Club. SO SRL Club members are engaged in media arts Career Technical Education (CTE) training, related to producing industry standard news stories. SO PBS Education Manager, Ben Garcia, has attended PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs (SRL) training with seasoned journalists at the PBS NewsHour over the last four summers, which has resulted in being certified by PBS Newshour to teach students and teachers industry standard video journalism skills. Mr. Garcia will continue this work into next school year (SY 22-23) with new and returning students from all over Southern Oregon.
